Claphamsouth Productions Presents Mary Seacole.

Mary Seacole Animation

Mary’s bravery drew the attention of British journalist and Times correspondent William Howard Russell. In one of his regular columns he wrote of Mary: ‘A more tender and skilful hand about a wound or broken limb could not be found among our best surgeons.'

Clapham South Production is making an animation of the life of one of Jamaica’s most celebrated heroes, Mrs Mary Seacole, known to many as Mother Seacole. For those who may not know anything about the heroine, here is a brief description of her.

“Mother Seacole was a Jamaican woman who lived in the 1800’s; she was one of the most important yet regrettably overlooked heroines of the Crimean war. Mary Seacole was a very successful nurse, who from birth would heal her dollies as a child. Florence Nightingale (the woman who was celebrated in history for her medical support in the Crimean war) visited Jamaica and noted Mrs Seacole’s work and her ability to successfully heal the sick under her care. Florence was possibly intimidated by Mrs Seacole’s medical prowess and later, wouldn’t accept her on her medical team that would travel to the front lines. Mrs Seacole travelled herself and helped many people, gaining in her duty many medals of honour from many different countries for her dedication. (Mrs Seacole was noted to help all injured regardless of their allegiances, often helping English and enemy soldiers.) Slavery was abolished in 1833 in Jamaica but was successfully completed in 1838, Mrs Seacole, herself being of mixed race heritage (her mother being a freed slave of mulatto heritage and her father a Scottish military officer) was well respected and befriended many English, American and foreign nationals, including minor royalty in England whom she had previously nursed. These people were also a major driving force behind her acceptance and notoriety in England. Mary Seacole’s marriage to the godson of Lord Nelson Mr Edward Seacole also helped her notoriety and popularity. “

The story illustrates the life of Mary Seacole when she was young (in her 20’s) and the lead up to her decisions to help with the war effort and make history in the way she did. Mary Seacole was well respected for her use of herbal remedies and medicines, this animation will give you an insight into the events in her life that created the heroine.
