The soundtrack has the potential to deepen and expand the story world of narrative cinema, to generate or reinforce thematic patterns, and to increase dramatic impact and audience involvement. This four-week introductory course will outline and explore the key elements of film sound and their often complex relationship to both picture track and story. Screening specific scenes from a selection of short films and features drawn from World Cinema and Hollywood, we will examine various uses of music, sound effects and dialogue, identifying their functions and impact upon the film as a whole.
By the end of the course, students and filmmakers will have gained a set of terms and techniques for analysing film sound, as well as key concepts to help in formulating and developing ideas for their own soundtracks. A basic understanding of the elements and techniques of film style, as covered in Insight’s Visual Literacy course, would be helpful, but is not essential.
Tutor: David Heinemann
David Heinemann is a lecturer in filmmaking and film studies on MA and BA programmes at Middlesex University. With a special interest in sound, he also gives lectures and workshops on the creative and technical aspects of film sound for Goldsmiths College, University of Westminster and Insight. He studied at Columbia University, New York, where he graduated with an MFA in Film. Two of his short films have received accolades at US film festivals.
His current film is in production with funding from the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts and is an experimental narrative entitled ‘The Connoisseurs’. Recently David worked as Sound Recordist on the short ‘Goblin Market’ and will be doing the sound design over the winter. He is also set to design the sound of another short, ‘The Ice Cream Van’, funded by Apex Arts.
David teaches with eloquence and passion, often leaving our students inspired as well as informed.
