Event Detail
Documentary Film Making is Exploding with new film makers winning Oscars, doing deals with broadcasters, selling DVD’s direct, and all with technology they could buy with a credit card. In short, making movies which win major awards, reach audiences and make money...

We will show YOU how to turn Your Great Ideas into Great Documentaries and start a career making movies, AND making money. Learn how to get your documentary Made, what technology to use, how much it will cost, what makes a great subject that will transfer into market sales, the pitfalls and the shortcuts.

This IS Your Only Chance TO Catch This Course IN THE UK! This one off, two day intensive seminar, is run by the authors of The Documentary Film Makers Handbook, who are flying in from LA for the event - Brit Film Maker Genevieve Jolliffe and seasoned US Doc Film Maker Andrew Zinnes. They are professional filmmakers who have worked in both the narrative and documentary arena for nearly two decades. Their docs have been seen on MTV, PBS, BBC, ITV and Ch4.

Course Objectives:

Concept: Your choice of concept drives ALL your decisions throughout the entire process of making your film. Learn the genres of doc filmmaking and what each means insofar as story & structure, financing and production.

Story & Structure: What are the key plot points of your story and how should they be arranged? We will give you some storytelling guidelines to get you started or out of a jam!

Finance: Learn all the possible ways to finance a doc - from TV networks to your Uncle Bill. International finance will be discussed as well.

Pitching: Techniques on getting your ideas across to other people who will give you cash, interviews or free stuff.

Legal: How to protect yourself from the baddies out there.

Production: Tips on budgeting, scheduling, getting deals, camera formats (film, HD, HDV, etc.), getting good sound, interview techniques, location scouting, permits, etc.

Post: Tips on editing, sound effects, narration, music choices, clearing your clips and music, etc.

Film Festivals: What are the good ones, dealing with publicity, how to create a buzz for your film, dealing with the press, the film's image, the producer's rep.

Sales & Distribution: Tips on - How not to get screwed, what do to if you do get screwed, standard and alternative distribution models.

Workshop: Sunday Afternoon focuses on an intense idea and execution workshop where you get involved in other delegates projects as well as road test your own ideas. This intense session, which takes place after the main seminar, is a unique way to fast track great ideas and has a proven track record with past delegates who have moved rapidly from idea and into production.

Our goal is to empower YOU to make informed concept choices, to clearly see the market and target it, and to secure funding for your doc.

See you there.
